Past Time - Spelling of -ing and -ed forms

Simple form
Smile, Hope
-ING
Smiling, Hoping
-ED
Smiled, Hoped
If the verb ends in –e:
-ing form: drop the -e add -ing
-ed form: just add –d
Simple form
Help, Learn
-ING
Helping, Learning
-ED
Helped learned
If the verb ends in two consonants, just add –ing or –ed
Simple form
Rain, Heat
-ING
Raining, Heating
-ED
Rained, Heated
If the verb ends in two vowels + a consonant, just add –ing or-ed
Simple form
Stop, Plan, Prefer, Admit
-ING
Stopping, Planning, Preferring, Admitting
-ED
Stopped, Planned, Preferred, Admitted
If the verb has one syllable and ends in one vowel + one consonant, double the consonant to make the –ing or –ed form
Simple form
Visit, Offer
-ING
Visiting, Offering
-ED
Visited, Offered
If the syllable of a two-syllable verb is stressed, do not double the consonant.
Simple form
Play, Enjoy, Worry, Study
-ING
Playing, Enjoying, Worrying, Studying

If the verb ends in a vowel + -y, keep the –y. Do not change the –y to –i. If the verb ends in a consonant + -y, keep the –y for the –ing form, but change the –y to –i to make the –ed form

-ing form: change the –ie to –y and add –ing.
